Continuing with our YAG Senior Spotlight series, we’re thrilled to hear from Amiriss on her four years with the group.

Amiriss joined YAG in ninth grade. She was already a member of PAUSE, a mental health-focused organization at her school, when she learned about YAG from her teacher– and current NMASBHC board director Joan Newsom.

Since joining YAG, Amiriss has developed more confidence with public speaking and has nurtured a passion to help others.

“These experiences showed me that I want to help others and be involved in my community,” she said. “They helped guide me toward a career where I can make a difference.”

Amiriss is most proud of the projects that have highlighted the importance of the school-based health center at her school and how impactful youth voices can be in the mental health sector.

“Health is more than just your body,” she said. “Mental health and having access to care are just as important.”

After graduation, Amiriss plans to attend university and explore a career that allows her to help her community.

Her advice for new YAG members?

“Your voice matters. Be open, try new things, and take all the opportunities.”

If you or someone you know would like to join the Youth Health Advisory Group in the upcoming school year, reach out to Wilma at wilma@nmasbhc.org, or visit our YAG page for more information.
