Native H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People Endure)

The Native HOPE training/program focuses on strengthening adult – youth partnership and community action planning.  Key elements will include:

  • Overview of the Native H.O.P.E. model – An interactive, prevention program focused on building strengths in Native American youth by increasing capacity and awareness and youth leadership.
  • Team Building - Culturally competent activities incorporating spirituality, humor, and important values such as belonging, mastery, interdependence and generosity will be modeled to teach each team about building adult/youth trust, communication and team effectiveness.
  • Community Action Planning – Provide each team with information, skills and abilities needed to develop and maintain an active community team committed to creating an action plan to implement prevention and wellness activities to increase youth resiliency

Purpose: To strengthen the capacity of teens and young adults to help each other in leadership development and prevention.

Training Goals:

  • To provide a training process that is culturally competent by incorporating culture, spirituality, humor, and values such as belonging, mastery, interdependence and generosity.
  • To provide participants with a process and activities to conduct team and trust building and to develop effective communication skills.
  • To provide a prevention strategy that impacts multiple domains such as individuals, parents, school, communities, peers, professionals, and faith/spiritual leaders.
  • To deliver a strengths-based prevention model aimed at decreasing risk factors, in particular, substance abuse, depression, hostility, violence, impulsivity, and exposure to trauma.
  • To provide awareness about the risks related to “Codes of Silence” and suicide among youth and know how to make appropriate referrals and provide support.
  • To help describe the risk factors and warning signs that contribute to suicide behaviors.
  • To provide a process for young people to identify and use their strengths to break unhealthy multi-generational cycles within families/communities and to develop/maintain healthy relationships.
  • To assist the young people to develop a strategic action plan that is a community response to assist and support the youth, families, and communities to increase strengths and resiliency.
