NMDOH Releases Information About SBHC Cuts
The New Mexico Department of Health recently announced that it will not renew contracts for five school-based health centers (SBHCs) at the beginning of the next fiscal year (7/1/16). This decision is likely to result in the reduction of access to physical and behavioral health care for students in Albuquerque, Belen, Maxwell, Mountainair, and Tijeras. The press releases from NMDOH detailing the decisions are available at the link below.
Recent legislative budget cuts to SBHCs are proving to have very real and unfortunate consequences to the well-being of students who relied on these centers for care. The New Mexico Alliance for School-Based Health Care is saddened by this news and will continue to advocate for policies that will fully fund a comprehensive system of school-based health care in our state. We have offered our support to the agencies that sponsor these SBHCs and will work to provide technical assistance and any other support possible during the transition period. Parties seeking more information about the changes announced or alternative care options may wish to review the press releases below or contact NMDOH.
